Course description

Africa is home to a diverse range of minerals, including gold, coal, platinum, and diamonds, which are mined in various countries. The mining industry is in decline and the socio-economic impacts of the decline of the mining industry most directly affect communities that once drew their incomes from mining operations. In some distressed mining towns, various skilled mine workers have turned to informal mining practices as a source of revenue.

The legacy of mining in South Africa provides opportunities for revitalisation and diversification which will ensure that the mining sector continues to contribute to the province's economic growth and development. Ex-miners possess valuable skills, experience, and knowledge of the mining industry such as mining services, equipment maintenance, and small scale mining/ value-added processing. The department aims to appoint an implementing partner for the Implementation of the Mining/Engineering Incubation programme that will empower ex- miners to establish their business and providing them with training and capacity-building opportunities, knowledge, and resources needed to participate effectively in the economic development of their communities, reducing unemployment, poverty and improving overall socio-economic conditions.
