The aerospace and defence industry plays a vital role in the global economy by supporting and facilitating passenger transportations, trades, logistics, security and defence. The industry consists of several players servicing both commercial and military operations across the value chain. Africa has strategically positioned itself as a participant on the global stage within the aerospace and defence industry. It holds a dominant position as the leading market for business aircraft in Africa, underscoring its prominence in the regional and international aviation landscape. Furthermore, the country has managed to develop designing and manufacturing capabilities and set up local companies that are now supplying tier one components across the global value chain.
Although the performance of this sector is encouraging, the sector needs to use its current strengths to create new opportunities and to develop its weaknesses. The slow pace of transformation in the Aerospace and Defence sector remains a concern. Challenges include the sector’s inability to become globally competitive and to successfully facilitate the inclusion of the previously disadvantaged people in the sector.
As a result, in order to improve the competitiveness of the sector and advance its transformation, there is a need to identify and develop skills that are required by the aerospace industry. To achieve this aim, there is a need for the department to partner with a key industry player that would develop sector specific skills programme that would target black people and enhance capabilities to improve the competitiveness of the sector.
