Course description

Africa is facing a critical shortage of artisans as of 2018 for South Africa having a shortage of 40,000 qualified artisans. The demand for these scarce skills will only increase in the coming years as the current generation of skilled craftsmen retires. Many artisans are also

being recruited intensively so by international organisations, the reasons for this is that South Africa’s past learnership programmes were recognised as world class and that relatively high salaries are offered by these international organisations. A large body of evidence suggests that good vocational programs can contribute to the solution by offering real-world training that is related to the possibility of employment and easing the transition from school to the workplace. It is crucial to have sufficient artisans in South Africa to enable infrastructure development, economic growth and wealth creation and to support the National Skills Development Plan which aims to produce 30 000 artisans by 2030.

This therefore makes the IRM initiative area of focus to improve specialised skills set and support for smaller businesses to accelerate the growth in this instance for tSouth Africa and Africa respectively. The Installation Repair and maintenance (IRM) initiative seeks to provide an immediate response to skills demand in local economic contexts through addressing demand and supply factors and the interface thereof within the township context, through the establishment of township hubs and positioning public facilities as opportunity platforms for job creation, technical capacitation, coaching and mentoring
